Work for the SH41/SH53 Bridge is scheduled to begin construction in March 2013. The 24-month long construction project will focus on replacing the existing bridge superstructure (raising the grade/elevation which spans the BNSF Railroad), utility relocation efforts, constructing paralleling pedestrian sidewalks, intersection improvements on the west side and east side of the bridge. Vehicular traffic will be maintained during construction activities; although, significant delays are anticipated. For the duration of the project, the Idaho Department of Transportation (ITD) will manage the construction efforts.
Council Approves Chickens
In December 2012, the City Council reconsidered allowing chickens on single family residential lots. It passed unanimously with some conditions. The Council voted about a year ago to not allow them at that time and to see how things went in communities around Rathdrum. After a year of no issues the Council reconsidered after additional requests to allow chickens. Below are the basic conditions.
We have had questions about our snow gate usage during snow storm plowing. Rathdrum Public Works uses “gates” to shield snow from being left in-front of private drive approaches. When referring to a “gate”, it should be noted that it is an actuated/controlled lever which is attached to the plow apparatus. During snow plowing, gates are only intended to alleviate the volume of snow residual across drive approaches. When plowing snow, snow will build-up behind the gate and frequently spill-over.
The majority of snowfall events in Rathdrum are less than 3”. When there is a small amount of snowfall, snow gates are a common benefit in shielding snow from being deposited across driveways. However, when snowfall events are 3” or greater, the volume of snow being plowed increases significantly and the benefit of snow gates depreciates. It should be noted that snow gates are not intended to entirely screen/shield snow from being deposited across a driveway. Snow gates are only intended to reduce the size of a snow berm left behind from a city snow plow.
